Wilmslow Town Council has continued its support of Wilmslow In Bloom this year by awarding a £2,000 Green Community Fund award for their entry into the 2024 Royal Horticultural Society's 'In Bloom' competition.
Wilmslow In Bloom is a community partnership made up of many local voluntary groups who aim to make Wilmslow a more attractive place to live, work and visit by brightening our town through floral and edible displays. The group encourage community spirit, including everyone with a shared goal of enhancing the town, as well as promoting care for our natural assets and heritage.
The Wilmslow In Bloom team also encourage the involvement of local businesses, schools and other organisations in helping brighten the town by planting colourful displays.
Wilmslow In Bloom has represented Wilmslow in the nationwide RHS In Bloom competition since 2012, winning gold Town awards each year.
Last year's theme was 'New Bloom' in honour of new beginnings and reflecting a new King, which resulted in awards recognising the hard work of several groups and locations involved, and a Gold Award in the Large Town category.
This year's theme is 'Friendship', to celebrate Wilmslow In Bloom bringing people together, forging friendships and enriching lives.
The nine Wilmslow groups being showcased in 2024 are:
Wilmslow In Bloom, CETRA and Friends of Colshaw Parks, Chapel Lane 'Love the Lane', Friends of Wilmslow Station, Lindow Common, Wilmslow and District Rotary, Wilmslow Community Market Garden at Oakenclough Children's Centre, Wilmslow Community Market Garden at The Temp and Wilmslow United Reformed Church.
The groups estimate they have already spent over 5,000 hours volunteering so far this year.
The grant from Wilmslow Town Council will be used to cover this year's competition entry fee, banners, flyers and graphic design for artwork, in addition to items including plants and compost, planters for the local schools, liability insurance and the Wilmslow In Bloom competition Portfolio.
Wilmslow Town Mayor, Jon Newell, said, "We are thrilled to continue our support for the Wilmslow In Bloom team, who work incredibly hard to make our town more beautiful and biodiverse. We are thankful for the individual and combined efforts of all the volunteer groups involved and wish them the best of luck with this year's competition entry.'
The Wilmslow In Bloom team welcome new volunteers at their weekly gardening sessions, held every Tuesday between 10am – 12pm (weather permitting).
Wilmslow in Bloom Chair Sue Worthington said "You don't have to be a garden expert: come along to weed and enjoy the friendly banter. People always compliment us on how lovely the gardens are looking".
