Wilmslow Town Council recently awarded four new grants, three of which were through the recently introduced Wilmslow Town Council Green Community Fund, a grant scheme that was introduced last year for projects that promote sustainable spaces, biodiversity conservation and /or 'Greening' the Town.
River Street Residents' Association were awarded £1,150 to purchase sustainable nectar-rich planting to create biodiverse planters down River Street to support wildlife.
Friends of The Carrs has received £720 for their wildflower planting scheme. Friends of the Carrs are a voluntary organisation who work to make the Carrs a safe, friendly place for all age groups to enjoy, as a place for recreation and leisure and undertake maintenance and environmental schemes to benefit the local community and visitors to the park. The wildflower plug plants purchased with the Green Community Fund award will help to improve the biodiversity of the park.
Mersey Rivers Trust has been granted £2,000 towards its Carrs Wetland project - a crowdfunding project to restore and create wetland areas in the Carrs Park.
Mersey Rivers Trust is the partner for the management of the water environment for the River Bollin, as well as being the host of the Bollin Environmental Action and Conservation (BEACON) Steering Group. Within Wilmslow, Mersey Rivers Trust supports the coordination and delivery of volunteer work parties for both BEACON and the Friends of the Carrs.
The Mersey Rivers Trust's Carrs Wetland project has been devised following the recommendations made in 'The Carrs Landscape Development Package', published by Cheshire East Council, and the funding from Wilmslow Town Council will be used to purchase reeds, seeds and plug plants to plant in the wetland area.
Additionally, Wilmslow Art Under One Roof received a Community Grant of £1,652 for its upcoming exhibition, which takes place in the halls at Wilmslow United Reformed Church between Friday 7th and Sunday 9th October. The funding will be used for venue hire and event promotion.
Frank McCarthy, Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council, said, "We are delighted to use our Green Community Fund to support three voluntary groups who are working to promote the natural environment, in addition to the Art Under one Roof exhibition, which is always an enjoyable community event that promotes local artists".
