Street festival plans to bring the carnival to Wilmslow town centre

Spice Girls

Following last year's inaugural event, Wilmslow's Festival of Nature is back bringing free activities across the town - designed to help us learn more about the landscape around us and to inspire us to take more care of our planet.

There will be lots on offer for all the family and, along with cycle rides, zoom talks, cinema, a Community Garden celebration and a green homes tour, the Festival is hosting a Car Free Street Festival on Sunday 25th September between 11am and 4pm in the town centre.

The festival will feature the 'On Yer Bike' live music stage, all powered by bicycles and hosted by BBC Radio 6 DJ Chris Hawkins. Bands including Fondabath,
BlacksheepLad and Joel Gardner and Melanie Williams and Joe Roberts will all be performing.

Adding to the carnival atmosphere there will be stilt walking elephants accompanied by drummers to make plenty of noise as they roam through the town centre.

Event organiser Georgie Johnson said, "As the live music is pedal powered, we need everyone to come and help keep the amps going. Last year we had lots of people enjoying pedalling along to some fantastic entertainment. You can sign up on our website or just turn up on the day!"

Children's activities will include a special area to scoot or cycle around (bring your own transport) along with nature themed craft activities and circus fun .

Everyone is encouraged to come into the centre of Wilmslow from 11am-4pm and enjoy the town centre car free! If you need to drive, all the car parks and disabled parking slots will be available as usual.

Having known about this event for sometime, I can say that I'm in full support of it.

The article doesn't say that it will involve the closure of roads in the town centre for a few hours on a Sunday.

The road closures will not prevent access to local town centre churches such as the Roman Catholic, United Reformed and Methodist churches, nor will it prevent access to the dedicated disabled parking spaces in the town centre.

What it will mean, is that for a few hours on a Sunday, there will be no direct throw route access for traffic at the junction of Water Lane & Alderley Road.

Alternative routes will be available and signposted for local traffic and emergency service vehicles.

And signage will be in place to take all other traffic by alternative routes i.e The A34 (Wilmslow Bypass) and A555 (MAELR - Manchester Airport Eastern Link Road).

It's been a mammoth task organising this event and Georgie Johnson has done a magnificent job.

I encourage everybody in Wilmslow to "Come on down (by foot or bike) and enjoy the party.
