Community garden continues to grow

Community Garden

A local community a group which aims to create a more sustainable future began planting a community garden seven years ago at The Temp on Gravel Lane.

The Food Group of Transition Wilmslow began with ten fruit trees then added raised beds to the orchard in three stages, bringing the total to fifteen.

This expansion has been part-funded by Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund and Cheshire East Community Grant Fund.

They have also benefited from many hours of volunteer labour from Scouts and Guides, 5th Wilmslow Beavers and 7th Wilmlsow Brownies who have each adopted beds to plant up, weed, water and harvest.

Melanie Harris of Transition Wilmslow said "Despite the recent heatwave our garden is thriving. Everyone who comes to the park is full of praise. We're growing potatoes, broad beans, green beans, courgettes, squash, beetroot, peas, onions, leeks, garlic, peppers, chilies, herbs and soft fruit. Watering is much easier this year thanks to two big water butts we've installed adjacent to a neighbour's shed."

Once again the community garden will feature in Wilmslow's entry in this year's Britain in Bloom, which they received 'highly commended' for last year.

Melanie added "We'd love more people to get involved with the community garden. It's there for everyone. Regular meet-ups are 7pm every Tuesday evening – bring a few tools along if you have them. All ages are welcome and the produce is for everyone.

"The Temp is a small quiet park, much loved by locals, that forms a link between Gravel Lane and Eden Close. It's a great place for families to picnic and play."

Well done to everyone involved.
I regularly visit the temp to admire their efforts and I'm always quite envious because their results are much more impressive than mine.
