George Osborne visited Wilmslow on Friday, 30th September, for a ground breaking ceremony at the site of a new retirement living development which has just started construction on Holly Road North.
To mark the start of the build, the Tatton MP donned his hard hat and Hi Vis jacket to officially place the first spade in the ground at the Lawson Grange development of five one bedroom and 25 two bedroom apartments, designed exclusively for those aged 60 and over.
Mr Osborne said: "I was delighted to be asked to break the first ground on the latest new housing in Wilmslow. The previous Labour Government left this country with a housing crisis. In 2010, housebuilding had reached its lowest level since the 1920's. Significant progress has been made, with 700,000 new homes being delivered since 2010, however there is more work to be done and the Government is working closely with Councils to encourage sustainable development that meets the needs of local people."
He added "I am also glad that local people who choose to downsize will benefit from the Government's decision to take the family home out of inheritance tax for all but the richest people. The new residence nil rate band will be available for people who downsized after 8 July 2015 and whose other assets are passed on death to direct descendants."
Ian Wilkins, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy and Stone North West, commented: "It was a pleasure to welcome George Osborne to our latest development in Wilmslow. I'd like to personally thank him for his time to help us commemorate this exciting new development with an official groundbreaking ceremony."
