Handforth Scouts are celebrating their 90th year and they have organised a number of activities to mark the occasion.
The celebrations kicked off the celebrations last November with the return of the 1st Handforth Scouting bonfire which the group had not been able to run for several years.
Then on Saturday, 17th September, they continued their 90th year celebrations with a group hike that included the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers which finished at the Scout Hut with further activities, games and a barbecue. This was followed by an overnight camp behind the scout hut and a family open day on Sunday morning.
Group Scout Leader, Stephen Killilea said "Each of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts wrote a message, that was put into a time capsule and buried at the hut. The plan is to open this on the 100th year anniversary and read the messages that were written.
"We had 50 children from the group joining in the fun weekend, which included making smores to cook on the campfire, bouldering on our indoor climbing wall, firing cross bows, pioneering, launching water rockets and singing round the campfire."
Handforth Scouts are also launching a new Explorer Unit in the next few weeks which will be called 'Vulcan Explorer Scout Unit'.
Stephen said "This is great news as it means that we will be able to accommodate children from 14 to 18 whom we would otherwise have lost after Scouts so it is great to have such a group in the community that will offer such fun activities and ultimately want to be encouraging the Duke of Edinburgh Award."
Initially they expect to be able to accommodate 35 teenagers in the new Explorer Unit which will meet on a Thursday night at the Scout Hut on Old Road. Anyone interested in joining should contact email Bianca Hunt or call her on 07794931636. The group is open to males and females from the surrounding area, not just Handforth.
