George Osborne makes annual trip to charity card shop

The Chancellor of the Exchequer made his annual visit to the Combined Charities Christmas card shop on Friday, 4th December.

For the 14th consecutive year, George Osborne MP called into the pop-up Christmas card shop at Wilmslow library to lend his support to the Cheshire institution which is celebrating its 44th year.

Sheila Hallas MBE opened the first shop in 1971 and since then has raised over £4.75 million for the 50 participating charities who receive 100% of the money from the sales of their cards.

George Osborne met with the organisers and volunteers from the British Heart Foundation, Carers Trust4All and Crossroads Care Service who were staffing the shop that day.

Wilmslow resident Sheila Hallas, the Honorary Organiser, showed Mr Osborne some of the gifts which they sell, including a Winston Churchill puzzle and some family games. The margin the volunteers make from selling the gifts and stocking fillers goes to cover their costs enabling them to ensure that the charities get 100% of the card price paid.

George Osborne said: "It wouldn't be Christmas for me without a visit to the Combined Charities Christmas Shop in Wilmslow. Sheila and her team give so much time and energy to this fantastic cause and I would strongly encourage everyone to pop down to their nearest shop to stock up this festive season".

The Wilmslow shop will be open until Saturday, 12th December, from 9am to 5pm, with late opening until 7pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
