The countdown to Christmas will officially start in Wilmslow this week when the Christmas lights are switched on and Santa comes to town.

Actor Simon Gregson, best known as Steve McDonald from Coronation Street, has kindly agreed to turn on the Christmas lights in Wilmslow town centre at 5pm on Saturday, 28th November.

Once again the highlights of the day will be the parade of real reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh through the town, which is guaranteed to attract large crowds and delight both young and old alike.

The parade will be accompanied by performers from Alderley and Wilmslow Musical Theatre Company as they head towards Bank Square where entertainment on the stage will include performances from the choir of St Anne's Primary School, Wilmslow High School and Wilmslow Rock Choir.

As an added bonus to this year's Christmas lights switch on, The Market Co will be delivering an extra special Christmas Market in the Library Gardens (behind Hoopers) from 10am to 4pm.

They will be bringing together a selection of firm favourites from the regular Artisan Market as well as a host of completely new traders all focused on the festive season with gift ideas and foods galore.

There will also be hot mulled wine, entertainment by Hullabaloo and Santa's reindeer will be arriving in the town at around 2pm and will be available to view in the library gardens until the parade starts at 4pm.

Denise Valente said "The Market Co is very excited to have been invited by Wilmslow Town Council to host an 'extraordinary' Christmas Market as part of the Light Switch On celebrations taking place this Saturday.

"We plan to transform the park behind Hoopers into a festive winter wonderland bringing a host of new seasonally geared artisan traders to the town offering items that cannot be sourced on our regular events as well as a few favourites."

Town Clerk, Matthew Jackson said "Bringing reindeer to Wilmslow seems to capture the imagination of our children as demonstrated by the numbers that turn out each year. As a Town Council we believe that we should make a difference to residents of all ages and this annual event probably gives more fun to the under 10's than everything else we do throughout the year."

He added "The introduction of the Christmas Market is to bring people of all ages in to the town throughout the whole day, to help people to get in to the seasonal spirit and to encourage them to shop locally as much as possible over the Christmas period."

Many local businesses will be entering in to the spirit of the event offering festive refreshments throughout the afternoon and little ones are invited to make their own rendeer mask at Wilmslow Library before heading into town to meet Santa's reindeer and enjoy the Christmas market and lights. This is a free drop in event taking place from 10am to 12noon.

The switch on of the Christmas lights this year will take place at around 5pm on Bank Square.
