New planting design for Memorial Gardens roundabout

Work has started on re-planting the roundabout by the Memorial Gardens where the overgrown vegetation was removed at the beginning of the summer.

The new design has been chosen to be sympathetic to the nearby Memorial Garden and ensure clear visibility across the roundabout.

Cllr Rod Menlove said "This is an important roundabout for the image of Wilmslow. It is on a major entry road and adjacent to the Memorial Gardens. We wanted a design and plant selection that would encourage a feeling of calm, contemplation and reflection. The plants need to settle and develop but there is every indication that the brief is being met. I'm so pleased that we are in good time for Remembrance Sunday this year and indeed the four years of commemorations of the First World War."

The trees were planted on Friday, 24th October, and the remaining low growing shrubs and grasses will be added on Monday, 27th October weather permitting.

Not sure there is much time for "calm, contemplation and reflection". It's a busy roundabout and you need to keep your eyes peeled for the traffic coming from all directions. That roundabout is oddly positioned and traffic coming from the bypass heading towards Church Street is incorrectly lined up with the bollards as they exit the roundabout. It should have stayed as the intersection it was previously.

Sure it will be an improvement. The next wise step would be to paint some arrows at the junctions. Seems most people don't recall the rule of going straight on in the left lane, unless directed otherwise.

Anyone would think there was a blooming by-election coming...

I'm all for making Wilmslow an even more pleasant place to live (and keeping it green) but, like Mr Fox above, I'm not sure that roundabout is the place for quiet contemplation. And why would you when you have the memorial gardens and the Carrs just a stone's throw away?

Without taking anything away from the people who commissioned to design and plant it (it is a very nice design), I think it would have been better value for the tax payer to have something low maintenance or even maintenance free instead of one which will require ongoing work i.e. 'A neatly mown strip of turf around the outer edge'.

My thoughts are that it is an ideal place for a sculpture by a local artist (e.g. http://bit.ly/1kObRwH). It would be seen by visitors entering the town, would be maintenance free and would act as a navigation aid (turn left at the roundabout with a pear on it!). And my guess is that it would be far less likely to be vandalised than in the centre of town.

However, the decision has been made and the spades are in the ground so I suppose we should all just enjoy it. It strikes me as ironic though that Cheshire East wants to build on the green spaces that people want but plant trees on spaces that people aren't overly concerned about!

Dear Councillor Mendlove. I have no objection to you taking an opportunity for a photo shoot, but please please wear the appropriate safety equipment when entering a work site in the middle of a public highway.!!!!!

What that roundabout does NOT need are trees and shrubs.
Cars approaching from Wilmslow & Handforth need to see approaching contraflow vehicles, esp those from Wilmslow heading for the by-pass and vice versa for those from Handforth. A simple matter of road safety.

As for proper attire .a poppy in the lapel wouldn't have gone amiss at the memorial garden !!....... but of course this is not about the Memorial garden and the good work going on...... vanity can apply to both insecurity and egotism........

Thought I recognised the bloke in the suit. The shrubbery has once been removed from this roundabout as it grew and blocked the view of intended exits. It needs to be flat and maintenance free.
