Market move hailed a "resounding success"

Almost a year after moving the Wilmslow Artisan Market to a Sunday, the market returned to a Saturday at the weekend for a trial period.

The monthly event, delivered by The Market Co, also moved to a new site, with nearly 100 stalls located along the Alderley Service Road from Sainsburys to Multiyork.

There has been a lot of debate around which day and where the Artisan Market should be held for a couple of years now and in August 2013 a group of retailers called for the market to be switched to a Sunday, because it was having a negative impact on sales on their busiest day of the week.

As a result, Wilmslow Town Council commissioned an independent research company, at a cost of approximately £3000, to assess the impact of the Wilmslow Artisan Market. After considering the results, it was decided that future Artisan Markets in Wilmslow will be held on a Sunday. The first Sunday Artisan Market was held in November 2013.

Since the move, the market proved much less attractive to both residents and visitors, as well as some of the businesses that chose to open especially for market Sundays.

As a result of the drop in footfall and impact on businesses, it was decided that the market would relocate and move back to a Saturday as a pilot scheme.

Speaking about Saturday's market, owner Denise Valente said "The market on Saturday was a resounding success from all quarters.

"So many people stopped me to say how pleased they were with its return to Saturday and even more commented on how stunning the new location was, enabling much more freedom of movement and visibility.

"I have received numerous emails and telephone calls congratulating us on its success from retail shops, market traders and the public. In fact I have been totally amazed at the quantity and incredible overwhelming positivity of the responses.

"The number of stalls was less than we used to have when the market was on a Saturday on Grove Street, mainly due to the stipulations to maintain a uniform image to the road front which meant those traders that used to bring their own gazebos of all shapes and colours had to be incorporated into the main market. It was imperative that I maintained space between gazebos to allow access to the shops and so this determined the number we could accommodate. Despite these limitations, the result I feel delivered on every aspect that I had promised."

This new location is being monitored on a month by month basis by Cheshire East Council and Wilmslow Town Council. They will continue to gather feedback which will be taken into consideration when they determine what happens with the Artisan Market moving forward.

Perfectly put. A resounding success - how many years did it take?
Marred only by the atrocious parking all around- on pavements, yellow lines, junctions etc. and some of them weren't even in 4x4s. Ensure all unused office parking is available (more chance to be Wilmslow's best friend, Pete) and wardens are busily scuttling around.

It was great to see the market return to a Saturday. Personally I think that the Grove Street shopkeepers will lose out for the simple reason that most people stayed on the other side of Wilmslow. When it was on Grove Street, I used to pop into the card shop, Clarks, Monsoon, Boots and other stores but I didnt manage to get to that side of town on Saturday as there were so many lovely things to look at, eat and drink on the market. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and well done to Denise Valente for her determination and drive in keeping this market going, despite all of the negative feedback from shop keepers. Before long there will be no shops left in Wilmslow anyway. Such a refreshing change to have an Artisan Market with lovely people who are making their wares and selling them on.

Nothing against the market day or location BUT South Drive must not be closed to traffic it caused chaos. It is the main access point to the car park. The market is taking up 50 spaces so how about free parking on Saturday too.

I was on Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary's tombola stall - the location is much much better, market seemed busier. I had no problems parking either. We made a fantastic amount for our animals, so thank you to everyone who came to visit our stall.

Fantastic!!... the only slight negative is, it's a shame that the number of stalls is reduced. Is there an alternative? I notice the comment about Grove St businesses losing out, but isn't that their own fault for causing the problem and complaining in the first place? Can't have it both ways... maybe for the sake of their businesses they should admit defeat and let it go back to Grove St so that more stalls can take part. Would probably be safer all round too.

Personally I preferred the old location, but if this is what it takes to keep it on Saturday, I'll live with it, it's a much better day for me, and the timing is more important to me than the location. There was a nice buzz to it again, which had been missing on Sundays. I agree it was a success, please keep it that way and stick to Saturdays!

Grove Street!!!! 6 units empty or permanently shut, 9 financial institutions closed on Saturday afternoon (if open on Saturday at all), 4 cafes/pubs with chairs and tables all over the place, planters, benches and A-boards aplenty. It was never suitable for the market. Perhaps this success will lead to the whole service road being used and more stalls fitted in. Where was my man with the Baclava and bhajis????

I went there prepared to be disappointed by the new location (though always said it was best on a saturday). Instead it made a good first impression. Parking was a big problem, and a traffic jam stretched from the kings arms all the way to centre of Wilmslow. The Health Centre car park (quite big) next to the Carters Arms was empty, and needs to be made available to market visitors. I parked at the high school, thanks to their generous offer, but it's a long walk from the market...

Hard for most of us to resist saying "told you so". If the rest of the service road can`t be used, (is this because of parking or what?) maybe one row of stalls, well spaced, on Grove street could be a way of compromise? Lovely vibe on Saturday anyway.

We certainly enjoyed the move! Strangely, we felt there were more stalls - quite surprised to hear that there were less. Perhaps that was due to the fact that we could get up close to them all - on Grove Street, one spent half the time manoevering around seats and bins. Not seen it so busy for a long time. We went to Grove Street afterwards - not as busy as earlier Markets, but busier than the previous couple of Saturdays. Here's to a long future...

The traffic problem is not really related to the Artisan Market, or day of the week. The main traffic lights outside the Rex have had their timing altered, until Saturday 11th it was possible for perhaps 25-30 cars travelling from the Fulshaw Cross (King's Arms) direction to pass through the lights; since them it seems to be six cars at a time, hence the long queue every day of the week. This change seems to have coincided with the third Sunday of road closures to resurface the roadway.

I have attended the market every Saturday and Sunday since it started with the exception of one or two. The market was never going to work on a Sunday and I was delighted that it was moving back to a Saturday. Was a bit unsure of the new location but was very pleasantly surprised. It worked really well, the stalls were much easier to access than when on Grove Street. But I must agree the retailers on Grove Street may miss out. I ran out of time and didn't visit Grove Street.

As far as the traffic / parking was concerned, maybe it depended on what time you went as I did not go until just after lunch. No problems, no illegal parking that I could see, spaces behind Hoopers and in Broadway Meadow.

Well done Denise for persevering and long may it continue.

Good to hear all the mainly positive feedback. Turnout to the November & December markets might prove a bit more challenging to maintain if the weather becomes much less clement than last Saturday. Hopefully therefore room could be found to include some seasonal market stalls including maybe Gluwein & bratwurst sausage type refreshments?

We thought the market was a huge improvement on the Sunday events and much better away from Grove Street. It had a continental feel about it with much better spacing and the boulevard under the trees. It felt larger than when it was in Grove St. If the shops there see less trade than before, well....What goes round, comes round...

Congratulations to the perseverance of the organisers - and to the people who refused to let it die.

Perhaps the local council will take note?

Really enjoyed my trundle round the new look market. I thought the venue really worked, nice under the trees, lots of money being spent( I know I did)
I don't know about the traffic as I walked up to town I'm sure others could too. Walked over to Grove Street just to see what it was like and it certainly was quiet, but I think it is better in its new home. Well done for sticking at it Denise!

Great news and even better news that there was nowhere left to park.

Full up car parks instead of half-empty ones are a sign of lots of customers coming to Wilmslow to spend their money.

Empty car parks and very popular shopping centers don't go together in the UK. You can have one or you can have the other, but not both.

So which is it to be?

Well the comments above are pretty one-sided, as expected it was a huge success. So; no comments from our elected Cllrs either on WTC or CEC? Having spent £2k on the previous survey, which produced the wrong answer (if it produced any answer at all) can we assured that the "month by month" monitoring will not cost us anything and how to WTC and CTC propose to get feedback and from whom?
