Art Trail hailed huge success and raises £624 for local Hospice

The second Wilmslow Art Trail proved a big hit at the weekend with people of all ages enjoying the wonderful and varied collection of original artwork on display across the town.

Georgie Johnson of Wilmslow Business Group said "It's been lovely watching people wandering around town clutching their maps and programmes and visiting so many different locations. We've been really pleased to have so many different types of art featured, from ceramics, furniture and jewellery, to bookbinding, painting and sculpture.

"Bringing art out of a studio or gallery setting and having it available everywhere around the town really encourages people to see the wealth of talent that we have on our doorstep. It's been a complete pleasure to work with so many talented people and we look forward to doing it all again next year!

"We'd also like to say thanks to the businesses who acted as venues all over the weekend. It's great to bring in a new audience to them as well as for the artists. I hope that they have had a successful weekend as well - I know that many of the artists have sold a great deal of work and commissions have been received which is great news."

Artist Helen Robinson had a very busy and successful three days, selling 18 paintings, including one commission, during her first Wilmslow Art Trail.

Helen told me "It's lovely to meet your customers and explain the story behind the paintings. It's been a very positive experience taking part for the first time and I'm thrilled with the outcome.

"My venue hosts at Farrow & Ball have been fantastic to work with, so enthusiastic and eager to help set up. I really didn't expect to be given so much space to display my work.

"The footfall throughout the event has been great, a good mixture of general public, art students and other artists."

Helen added "Painting at my venue enabled me to easily explain my process. I was working on a piece relating to a new project in collaboration with a choreographer Ben Wainwright."

New for this year, each participating artist donated a piece of original work in postcard form which were available to buy for £20 each. Tatton MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne also donated a hand drawn signed piece for the charity postcard sale.

George Osborne's postcard was sold via sealed bids, fetching £121 and the postcard sale raised a total of £624 for East Cheshire Hospice.

Georgie added "We're absolutely delighted to have raised this amount for such a good cause. The artists generously gave their postcard artwork for free which is fantastic."

As dusk fell on Saturday night, Wilmslow town centre became the location for another new addition to the Art Trail - 'Projection Bombing'.

Local buildings, including the Library and Grove Street businesses were turned in to giant canvases, displaying images created by the Lindow Photographic Group, led by tutor Richard Weston, one of the Art Trail professional artists.

Explaining the concept, Richard said: "We wanted to use the digital capabilities of photography and turn the every day buildings of Wilmslow into stunning canvases that showcased our art."
