Kids swing into action at new play area

The children's play area at Meriton Road Park, Handforth has reopened following an extensive revamp.

The work, which was carried out by Cheshire East Council, cost £70,000 and was funded by S106 money*.

A consultation was carried out giving local children and parents the chance to pick which play equipment they most wanted to see in the scheme, which has been designed to appeal to a broader age range. The new equipment includes a zip wire, basket swing, tornado overhead carousel, storm roundabout as well as seating and a picnic area.

Councillor David Topping, Cheshire East Council Cabinet member in charge of environment, said: "It is marvellous to see this play area reopen and busy with children and families following an exciting £70,000 overhaul of facilities.

"The work has really improved the facilities for imaginative and dynamic play and made the play area more accessible to a greater range of children, including youngsters with disabilities.

"Previously the play area was for children aged four to eight but the improvements have extended this to youngsters aged from two to 13 and include seating, a picnic area and new pathways.

"We are proud that our consultation with local residents gave children and parents the chance to pick which play equipment they most wanted to see in the scheme – and the results are fantastic!

"I would like to thank the Friends of Meriton Road Park and the local ward members Councillors Barry Burkhill and Dennis Mahon for their tremendous support for this Cheshire East Council project and helping to make this a success."

John Berry, chairman of Friends of Meriton Road Park (FOMRP) said "I applaud all the kids and parents for their patience, at times it has been an unbelievable task."

John added "I am really really pleased with the way it has come together but this is only the start. We have got a 5 year plan to make continued improvements and put facilities back into the park."

Steven Thelwell, of FOMRP, said "Seeing the kids' smiles makes you feel proud to be part of it."

The new children's play area will be officially opened at the Mayfest on Monday 26th May where a full stage line-up with a professional host has been arranged.

The scheme was delivered by Ansa, the Council's new waste and streetscene services arms-length company.

*Section 106 agreements are negotiated between developers and the Council and the money can used to help fund affordable housing, parks, roads etc.
