Last month we reported that a pet shop with a pet washing and grooming facility is planning to open in the town centre.

We can now reveal that it is Pets At Home who are proposing to turn the former Blockbuster store on Alderley Road into a pet shop called Barkers.

The Handforth based company has submitted a planning application to install hardwood panelling to the shopfront, new light fittings and signage for their new brand.

The plans can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 14/0063M. The last date for submitting comments is 15th January and a decision is expected by 11th February.

As reported last month an application for confirmation that it would lawful to use part of the former Blockbuster store for the washing and grooming of pets has also been submitted.

The proposed pet grooming facility will account for approximately 18% of the floorspace and be ancillary to the retail store.

17-19 Alderley Road has been empty since Blockbusters closed in March this year.

Brilliant news, makes a great change from Wilmslow's usual phone shops and estate agents!

I agree - its been quite a while since we had a pet store in the town and I believe it will be a terrific addition. I'm sure they will have it covered but I really hope they have total security for the grooming facility because - heaven forbid - if any pets did escape - there's busy traffic front and back of this building. Apart from that - can't wait to start shopping there!

I welcome any new commercial enterprise taking over empty retail space in Wilmslow, I would urge potential pet-owning customers et al to support the Blue Cross charity shop in Grove St/Grove Arcade and the Newgate Animal Sanctuary with donations etc.

I am delighted at news of new tenants for the former Blockbuster store. I am sure the "Barkers" brand will do well in Wilmslow. I hope a "drop off" facility will be provided to the rear of the premises to enable customers to safely deliver / collect dogs when using the new grooming facility.

This is good for wilmslow. Much better than banks and shoe shops
