New season kicks off with a piece of musical history

Douglas Badger

A piece of Manchester musical history will be heard in the next concert of the Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra, which takes place on Saturday 19th October in Wilmslow Leisure Centre.

Carl Fuchs was one of the German immigrants who made such a strong contribution to musical life in 19th century Manchester. He was the Hallé Orchestra's principal cello for many years and also made his debut with them as a soloist in the Schumann Cello Concerto.

On that and subsequent occasions he played a cadenza written by his teacher Bernhard Cossmann, and in this concert the Scottish cellist Douglas Badger, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, will be playing the work again with Cossmann's cadenza – apparently, the first time it has been heard in the region in over a hundred years.

The concert stands, appropriately, between summer and winter – there's a summery feel to Dvorak's 8th Symphony, one of those happy works which are a pleasure from start to finish, while equinoctial gales are blowing in Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave Overture.

This concert marks two more firsts – it's our first concert with the Italian conductor Marco Bellasi, and it's also the first concert in a varied and well-packed season.
