Travellers camped near bypass ordered to leave

A group of travellers who have set up camp on Council land adjacent to the A34 Wilmslow bypass have been issued with a notice to leave.

The travellers have spent a couple of weeks camped in a field close to Wilmslow High School, which belongs to Cheshire East Council.

AA spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "The Council is aware of the Gypsies/Travellers that are based on Council land off the A34 Wilmslow bypass.

"Today we have issued them with a notice to leave by 9am on Monday (July 1). If they do not leave by then, we will take court action to secure repossession of the site."

A group of travellers set up camp at two different locations close to the A34 bypass last month.

Initially the travellers spent a week camped in the grounds of Wilmslow High School, adjacent to the A34 bypass. Once they were evicted from the High School they moved down the road to a field off the Alderley Edge bypass, pictured above, where they spent 5 or 6 days.

How much will it cost to clean up the mess when and if these travellers vacate ?.....
Who will prosecute the criminal damage being caused to the council owned land ?...
What positive action does the council intend taking to reduce the cost to residents who will currently foot the bill for their reprehensible conduct in tidying this mess... again... ?
and what PREVENTATIVE action is being taken by the council to challenge this continuing recurrence.?

Standing on the footbridge over the by-pass near the High School yesterday, I have had the misfortune to witness sanitary hygiene habits at their worst ... There are some 20 plus caravans and their associated vehicles... alongside piles of rubbish and debris and dogs running wild. These people damage any preconception of community spirit or harmony / integration... far from any preconceived honourable Romany tales of old.

Would it be appropriate now to ensure no vehicles vacate the council owned land until a £500 bond for land restitution and incurred legal costs is made.....

Ok I'm playing devils advocate here but this issue goes on and on and on ... The council and police are too slow to respond. No one is ever prosecuted for criminal damage. There are sites available for travellers at a cost .... not for free.

But whilst we waste time effort and money on the need to lay down yellow lines around residential areas in Wilmslow where there is no statistical or qualified need to paint them, perhaps the council could better direct its resources to being more imaginative using legislation and its legal dept. to nip in the bud these unsanitary and messy unauthorised encampments occurring.

If i was a betting man I imagine once vacated ... a new encampment will occur nearby,,,,,

Not in My Back Yard....... but maybe in Yours.... Welcome to Wilmslow !

I'm sure I can answer that for you Nick.

In relation to who will pay - US!

In relation to what positive action will be taken in the future - NONE!

This is Cheshire East remember; can't fix the roads but can spend money on necklaces for the Mayor, can't stop travellers parking illegally but can make sure you get a fine for being ten minutes late back to your car in a car park.

There were 'travellers' on this site only a few weeks ago. They were evicted, the council cleane up (at our expense) and hey presto...in only a few days they were back! How did the council let that happen?
The area (close to a school) is now filthy, littered, dangerous and a total eye sore. How long does it take to get rid of them and can we get some kind of assurance that these people will not reappear.
Honest hard working council tax payers are being made a laughing stock.

Fly tipping is a criminal offence. Will our local plod have the guts to arrest them? Rhetorical question! Will all vehicle documentation be rigorously checked? Rhetorical question! Public order offences are being committed.
Will there be any arrests? Rhetorical question!

It would appear that they are now camped in the carnival field. The council's own stupid fault for not closing and locking the entrance gate once the circus left.

Yes it is in my back garden so I have a vested interest, but this is a recreational area used by football clubs, scout groups, children playing cricket/rounders/ etc and dog walkers. Caravans are parked all over the football pitch.

Their generators and beeping horns are keeping me up, I've now decamped to the spare room at the front of the house. God knows how long before we get our public space back and our children can play safely in the field.

What is the mechanism for getting the council to understand just how upset residents are at these expensive and idiotic failures to address basic site security on council owned land?
