Further restoration works of the river banks in The Carrs will take place next week.

Contractors are expected to be on site from Monday 8th July with volunteers joining them from Wednesday 10th.

Ever since the repair work was carried out by the Environment Agency (EA) in the spring of 2011 Friends of The Carrs have been trying to get further work undertaken.

Colin Shepherd, Chairman of Friends of The Carrs explained "Some months ago the Town Council agreed to underwrite up to £12,500 of costs although we now expect the project to come in for a little less than this.

"With support from Cheshire East Council, who have been very helpful, and encouragement from the EA we have been able to obtain the necessary Flood Defence Consent to permit the works to proceed. Without the enthusiastic support of all three parties it is unlikely we would ever have got this far.

"Most of the work to be undertaken will be between the two footbridges where, in places, the river bank has been eroded right back to the edge of the footpath. The banks will be re-profiled and strengthened and we plan to resow the area with grass and wild flower seed. We also intend to sow seed on the remaining bare patches from the work carried out just over two years ago.

"In addition the contractors will repair some of the work previously carried out downstream from the second footbridge where the winter floods have washed out some of the river bank. We will also be looking to use the volunteers to carry out other improvements along the length of the river through The Carrs."

Anybody interested in joining the Friends on 10th July, and possibly on the following two days, can meet them on The Carrs from 10am - they will be somewhere between the two footbridges. As they will be working by, or even in, the river suitable clothing and footware is essential. Activities for the volunteers will include: prunig and replanting willow, sowing of grass and wildflower seed, erecting protective fencing around the repaired area, clearance of litter and removing Balsam, low impact bank protection measures and whatever else they can think of and have time to do.

Colin added "Once the work is completed the worst of the erosion in The Carrs will have been addressed and with the work currenty being carried out at Quarry Bank Mill it will hopefully not be too long before we start to see a wider range of fish, insects and other wildlife alonmg the river as it passes through Wilmslow."
