Bid for new play area at Meriton Park

Parents and children were disappointed to discover that a popular piece of play equipment had been removed from Meriton Road Park in Handforth.

However, plans are being made to not only replace the climbing frame but create a new play area - if funding can be achieved.

During a recent safety inspection the wooden wooden Chapman's unit was identified as being unsafe and at the end of its life.

A mother contacted wilmslow.co.uk saying "Why has it gone? It was the most modern piece of equipment in the park certainly not run down, my daughter was very upset and said it was the main attraction!"

Marianne Hodgkinson, Parks Management Officer at Cheshire East Council, said "The item had become rotten at its base foundation and was removed for safety reasons, we take very seriously the safety of children in our play areas.

"In agreement with the relevant departments the frame which was at the end of its life was removed as soon as we were notified to avoid any potential accident."

The Council is now working on plans with the Friends of Meriton Road Park in the hope that a new play area can be provided.

Marianne explained " The Friends of the park are working with our parks department and in the process of putting together a bid to WREN for a new play area which may be relocated as the present area is always very wet.

"Local consultation will be carried out by the Friends to determine how we make the best provision for our community to continue to enjoy Meriton Road Park."

How about using the money that was set aside for the market? As this money was for the people of Handforth, I am sure a piece of equipment in the people's park would be most welcome .
