Popular Spanish conductor returns for summer concert

Juan Ortuno

Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra will be playing extracts from Bizet's Carmen under the popular Spanish conductor Juan Ortuño for their next concert on Saturday 15th June at Wilmslow Leisure Centre.

Dermot Gault explained "In this season we've scaled the heights with Bruckner's Seventh and plunged into the emotional depths of Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony. We've had Scandinavian and all-English programmes. For the final concert of the season we've a lighter programme with the emphasis on pure enjoyment. There's a strong Spanish flavour, as besides the Carmen excerpts we have Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol along with music by Granados. There are also two French classics in Fauré's Pavane and Debussy's Nocturnes, as well as Dvořak's bewitching Scherzo Capriccioso.

"Authentic performances are guaranteed with the popular conductor Juan Ortuño. Born in Madrid, he trained as a astrophysicist before studying conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music. Since then he has worked with Manchester Camerata, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Spanish Youth Orchestra, and we are fortunate in having him as a frequent and welcome guest conductor with the Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra."

Juan is also the Musical Director of the City of Manchester Opera, and members of the City of Manchester Opera Chorus will be joining them for Debussy's atmospheric Nocturnes and Fauré's popular Pavane.

The concert by Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra will take place in the Evans Theatre in the Wilmslow Leisure Centre on Saturday June 15th at 7.45pm.

Concert tickets, £10 or £2 for under 18's, are available from the ticket secretary on 01925 756 144 or on the door.
