Residents have another opportunity to take a guided walk around Lindow Common and learn about its importance as a protected precious natural habitat.

A series of events have been planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lindow Common being designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and residents are invited to join a guided walk next Wednesday, 8th May, from 10am to 12 noon.

Ranger Paul Hughes will point out areas of natural interest, describe the wildlife activities at this time of year, explain how the heath was formed and the on-going work to protect and maintain this valuable site.

Paul said "We were very pleased that despite the cold weather so many people came to the first three walks in early April. It is always great to have the opportunity to talk about the significance of the Common and answer questions. It is as a lowland heath that is rarer than tropical rainforest and a site of national importance."

Cllr Rod Menlove, who chairs the Common Advisory Group said "This 50th anniversary year of the award to Lindow Common of the status of a Site of Special Scientific Interest is a time to recognise the significance of this local jewel."

Wilmslow Town Council provided a grant of £22,100 to Lindow Common Advisory Group to enable them to produce an information leaflet, which will be printed shortly, and provide new information boards, which will follow shortly.

Cllr Menlove added "For ecological conservation purposes the Common is being returned to the condition of 5,000 years ago and we need to explain the reasons to residents. We sincerely hope that they will join the guided walks so that their queries on the planned actions of this long term project to protect and maintain this valuable site can be answered."

Walkers should meet at the car park on Racecourse Road opposite the Boddington Arms at 10am on Wednesday, 8th May.

Parts of the site may be muddy so suitable footwear is recommended. Families are welcome but this guided walk is not suitable for dogs.
