Graffiti spot cleaned up

The A34 pedestrian underpass to Wilmslow Park has suffered from more than its fair share of graffiti over the years.

Having been cleaned less than two years ago the underpass is now in need of more attention so a clean up operation is taking place this week. Three coats of paintare being used to cover the brightly coloured graffiti. This will be followed by a top coat of varnish.

Local councillor Rod Menlove said "It is unacceptable that yet again we have to paint over the walls of this underpass. The actions of a few individuals are against the interests of the majority, added to which we have to divert Council workmen from more productive jobs.

"The top coat will make it easier to remove any future graffiti paint since paint will not be absorbed in to the concrete. We hope that this will be the end to graffiti and ask that all residents are vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police."

Next week sees the start of the Wilmslow Town Council Spring Clean Week with teams of residents geared for action. Grot-spots have been identified and more volunteers are welcome. Email Matthew Jackson to register interest in helping at any time during the week.

Cllr Rod Menlove added "The cleaning of the underpass is a good start to the activity this year of this new annual event that spruces up our town."

In France this would be treated as urban art and encouraged. Why can't we do the same? It would avoid the cost of clean up and covering it for a start. It's not as if it can be an eyesore to the masses. Who knows, Wilmslow may have a budding Banksy in the making...... Council money would be better spend sweeping the streets and fixing potholes......

I'd agree. This was hardly a priority as the by-pass underpass isn't really visible to too many people.
I wouldn't like to see street sweeping replacing personal responsibility where litter is concerned. Everyone ought to take care of their own litter. Children and teenagers should similarly be encouraged to bin their own rubbish.
I don't understand why people bag up dog mess and then leave the plastic bag somewhere unsightly, even along the otherwise scenic Bollin river.
