Rotary rose garden to commemorate Queen's Jubilee

A new rose garden is to be planted in Wilmslow town centre to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the 75th Birthday of the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean.

The Rotary Club will start work on establishing a 'Queen's Diamond Jubilee Rose Garden' at the front of the Wilmslow War Memorial Garden, opposite St Bartholomew's Church

Rotarians will start work on the new garden on Wednesday, 7th November, where they will be planting 100 roses especially bred by Royal Warrant holders James Cocker & Sons based in Aberdeen. The rose has been named 'Heart of Gold' and is a hybrid rose with dusky peach petals, a delicate perfume and an abundance of large, dark green glossy leaves.

Rotary Club President, Ian Bradley said, "We were trying to think of an idea to establish a lasting and appealing landmark for the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean plus something for the good people of Wilmslow to enjoy. One of our members, Geoff Shelmerdine (Mr Scarecrow) suggested we take the opportunity to not only celebrate our own 75th year of working for the local community but also to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year and establish a rose garden in the town.

"We will be planting 100 'Heart of Gold' roses on the site this year and are grateful to Cheshire East Council (Community Foundation Fund) for their kind donation of £100 to the project.

"We look forward to seeing the 'fruits of our hard work' when the roses bloom in the spring for everyone to enjoy."
