NEXT plans for new format store at Handforth Dean

Draft plans have been unveiled for a new home and garden store at Handforth Dean, on land adjacent to the A34 alongside Tesco, Marks and Spencer and BHS.

Next, whose stores are a familiar sight on high streets, retail parks and regional shopping centres, recently developed a brand new home and garden store format and the proposed store at Handforth Dean will be its third new concept store.

This will be the company's first purpose built Next homes and garden store in the country, the previous two were conversions of existing retail outlets, and will be built on land which has been undeveloped for 17 years.

The site of the proposed Next store, which was used most recently on a temporary basis for airport parking, is part of a larger area of approximately 6 hectares of land. It is owned by Cheshire East Council and earmarked for development, but has been vacant for some time.

The new format combines traditional Next home and clothing goods with an expanded range of bulky home lines, including furniture, bathroom and kitchen displays, carpets, tiling, flooring, decorating items and DIY products alongside its new garden and outdoor living products which would be displayed in an outdoor sales area and conservatory.

The proposed building will be arranged over a ground floor with two mezzanine floors above. The store will also incorporate a garden centre and a coffee shop with 200 surface level parking spaces.

The store, which is intended to replace Next's existing Stanley Green store, will provide 200 jobs in a company where 75% of staff are aged 18 to 25 years old.

I attended the exhibition at Wilmslow Parish Hall this evening, unfortunately I only heard about it this afternoon but further exhibitions will be held at Handforth Youth Centre from 12pm to 7pm tomorrow (Wednesday 31st October) and Thursday, 1st November.

The exhibition provides an opportunity to explain the development proposed for the site and to invite your views and comments on the proposals. Once the development team has had the opportunity to review the feedback received, a planning application will be submitted to Cheshire East Council.

Martin Hughes, of Polity UK, attended today's exhibition of behalf of Next. He told wilmslow.co.uk "We will be submitting a planning application before Christmas. Cheshire East Council will take a decision early in 2013 on whether the land will be made available to Next which is a separate discussion with a separate part of the Council."

Fantastic news for the local economy! More jobs, and more money being pumped into the area, and with the local infrastructure already being there no distrubution to us while the buiding work is carried out. This will pull even more people away from the trafford centre into our local area and then they will come to Wilmslow and Alderley Edge for a look around while they are on the industrial estates next door. Win/win for everybody!!

Mindful that the A34 next to Handforth Dean can gridlock at peak times (e.g. towards Xmas), I hope that CEC and Next would ensure that quality cycling/walking links from the site to Handforth village centre, Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall, Heald Green etc are developed for customers and workers living within a 2 mile radius. People can make this point to Next via:

This, CEC owned, plot of land is one considered within the ongoing consultation on potential residential sites for Handforth - looks like this site is earmarked for other things!

Rob, by the fact Tesco's put on a free bus all day every day, that would suggest to me that no body walks to that area. I wouldnt fancy walking through that industrial estate at night/when its dark, especially just to look at some clothes or a lamp. Lets get real, these companys build out there and put big car parks for one reason, cheap land and so people DRIVE to them. Your right, the A34 can get to be a car park during rush hour, i sit in it regularly, but id rather have another 200 jobs and a bit more traffic, than consider the alternatives..........

Mark, you're right that the vast majority of visitors to Handforth Dean drive there (for the reasons you state) and I don't expect that to change significantly. However some local people do currently walk/cycle to the site - myself included - and this could be increased for a modest outlay. As you note - there are currently issues with lighting etc so this rare opportunity should be taken to make it easier/safer to walk/cycle for people living withing a 2-3 mile radius. I'm confident that the public asking for these modest measures will not deter Next form pressing on with their development a bringing employment opportunities to the area.

Rob, have you thought about going to the A555 exhibitions. They're planning to build in a cycleway as part of the relief road and to "connect it to local cycle routes". I reckon you might be able to ask them to improve links to Handforth Dean and Handforth village - particularly if you go with your "cycle Wilmslow" hat on.

Hi Richard - thanks for the tip - this is on my radar.
