Rotary gives Church Street benches a makeover

Church Street Seats

Back in April we reported on wilmslow.co.uk that the Town Council were embarking on a programme of refurbishing the town centre benches whilst seeking sponsorship from local businesses.

Councillors agreed at their April meeting to allocate £560 to repair up to eight benches in the town centre, which are looking tired, and seek sponsorship opportunities to minimise expenditure.

In response to the request, the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean have set the pace by refurbishing the two seats in Church Street.

The seats were originally presented by Rotary to the town in 1988 as part of a Community Service Project.

The recent work was carried out by Rotarians Alan Rossington and Bernard Davies.

Bernard said "Members with long memories were prompted that the club was involved with seats years ago and on inspection three of the wooded strips were missing and the others needed a good clean down and retreated with preservative oil. The metal end pieces were also sanded down and repainted.

"I took one complete seat home, after local authority permission, and did the work there. The other we could not move, as it was bolted to the flags, without the risk of smashing the iron work so we treated that on site."

Bernard added "The effort was promoted via the Rotary club Community Service Committee which is always looking for projects with a community service content."
