Young sports stars recognised at annual awards

More than 400 children, parents and teachers gathered at Wilmslow High School for the annual Wilmslow primary schools sports awards evening.

As well as the traditional round-up of sporting achievements of Wilmslow’s children, this year’s event also included awards for the inaugural primary schools ‘Olympics’.

Nearly every child in all eleven of our primary schools was timed in a run and had a throw and jump measured, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded for the best boy and girl runner, jumper and thrower!

In addition to the awards for sporting achievements, each school nominated one child for an award for exemplifying the five Olympic values of determination, friendship, excellence, inspiration and respect.

Parents and staff were thrilled to see the children’s beaming faces as they stood atop the ‘Olympic’ podiums to receive their congratulations and medals.

Event organiser, Darren Morgan, Headteacher of Lindow, said “Tonight was a fantastic celebration of the enthusiasm, sportsmanship and talent of Wilmslow’s children, we can be certain that the future of local sport is in excellent hands!”

In closing the evening, Alderley Edge Head, Chris Perry, said “When Mr Morgan first mooted the idea of an “Olympics” for our primary school children, fellow headteachers thought it was a tall order to organise, but we fully supported it as we all knew it was such a great idea!

"We’ve seen events all over Wilmslow, supported by all the schools and local facilities, and we’ve seen this evening how much it means to the children, well done Mr Morgan!”
