Help needed to spring clean Wilmslow

Volunteers are required to take part in Wilmslow's first Spring Clean this month.

Businesses and households are encouraged to work independently or in groups of neighbours to smarten Wilmslow's gardens, hedges, verges and pavements.

Volunteers are also being called to take part in larger projects that will smarten up other identified areas in the town where a community effort is required.

Wilmslow Town Council is leading the operation with the Wilmslow Local Area Partnership to spring clean the town between 14th and 20th May, which they hope will become an annual event.

The Spring Clean will be community led but will also be supported by specialist services provided by Cheshire East Council including the anti-graffiti team, waste collection services and road and gulley cleaning teams.

The proposed community projects to tackle include: leaves and litter clearance on the pedestrian ginnel by Daveylands; gutter clearance on Paxford Place; gutter clearance on Chapel Lane; the ginnel to Greenway from Alderley Road; litter and graffiti from the railway bridge linking Wilmslow High School to Macclesfield Road (being undertaken by the Probation Service); litter clearance on the wilderness behind Sainsbury's (being undertaken by Sainsbury's staff); litter clearance on the path from the railway station to Wilmslow High School (being undertaken by Wilmslow High School); removal of the grass overhanging the pavement at Little Lindow and clearance of the duck pond at the leisure centre (being undertaken by the scouts).

Cllr Ruth McNulty said "A Spring Clean of towns and cities throughout Europe has been a feature of the civic calendar for many years. It offers an opportunity for neighbours to come together to help smarten the appearance of their immediate surroundings.

"When we initially floated the idea of holding a Spring Clean here we were impressed with the enthusiasm and positive reaction we received. The Scouts, the Rotary Club, the Lions, the primary schools, Wilmslow High School and the staff at the Sainsbury's store have all volunteered to work on some of our larger projects. The event is timed to coincide with the Scouts' Community week. We will be enjoying additional help from the probation team to remove any remaining graffiti."

This is a great idea, but should be done every 3 months.I have personally been pushing this idea for the last 6 years with various Councillors The latest only two weeks ago with Councillor Gary Barton,I asked him to walk the streets with me,which he did, to see how poor the roads, pavements, litter, compacted leaves debris under hedges, that has been there for more than 3 years. The streets in Wilmslow and the gulleys/grids DO not get cleaned .Full stop!!!!!.Mr Barton had to agree with me.It is amazing that only last week all the battalions of road sweepers, litter men, trucks and cones can appear to clean the A34 by-pass, down to Handforth Dean. But cannot stay in the area to clean Wilmslow. These trucks and men come from the depot in Macc. Seems very poor planning and use of a needed resource.here. Barry

Well done Barry, we all try in our own way to do various things for the town. Its one thing looking at a compacted drain, another doing something about it. However, your walk-about point is more critical than the clean. We all spot different things and we all have our personal pet-hates and i'm sure that goes for the councillors too. My list includes gateway signage to the town, slowly but surely gaining momentum, our somewhat medieval shop gutter drainage of water on to grove st. (and everyone is surprised when it freezes and causes chaos), and, somewhat aesthetically, the old bottle bank/wire fencing and wall erosion of the leisure centre car park facing parsonage green. But hey, the list could on, to include someone please putting pressure on landlords to do their bit. Hats off to Emerson, who clean, litter pick and repaint, replant and maintain and (in my opinion) treat the town like its their own back garden. I love the weekly walkabout concept, i've done one, others should too.
