Soap star Samia Ghadie, added a few more strings to her bow at a community open day in Colshaw Farm.

The actress, who plays Maria Connor in Coronation Street turned her hand to making jewellery, planting hanging baskets and playing table football, in a bid to encourage residents of Colshaw Farm to get stuck in to activities on offer at the Open Arms Community Centre.

Social landlord, Riverside, invested £5,000 into the community centre, which was in danger of closing. It launched the open day with local partners to encourage residents to come along and find out more about their community venue.

Sharon Thomas, community initiatives team leader for Riverside, said: "We want to make sure that there is something for everyone at the Open Arms. The open day was a great opportunity to find out more about what people want from the centre and to provide some taster sessions and volunteering opportunities for residents."

Riverside is launching its neighbourhood warden service, Your Place, from the centre and will be funding a weekly Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) service from the Open Arms starting Wednesday 2nd May at 10am.

Sharon added, "Samia really got stuck in to all the activities on offer and had a great time meeting Colshaw families, young and old."

The Open Arms Community Centre is open to all and can be used for meetings, training and family occasions, call 01625 252262 to find out more.
