Another £100,000 has been saved, thanks to the commitment of Cheshire East residents to recycling.

Last month, the authority announced that the amount of waste being sent to landfill had been reduced thanks to the new recycling system in the area.

This has continued, with the amount now saved topping £200,000 in total.

The introduction of the silver bin has meant that recycling is now much simpler – all waste which can be recycled can be placed into the bin and is sorted elsewhere.

Due to recycling Cheshire East has reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill by a further 1,000 tonnes, which has resulted in substantial savings.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "Of course, the aim of introducing the new recycling system was to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, for the good of the environment and public finances.

"However, I have been pleasantly surprised at how dramatically this waste volume has been reduced and in such a relatively short space of time. I cannot thank residents enough for taking the time to recycle their waste.

"Most of our household waste can now be recycled – making sure this goes into the silver bin reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill and avoids the cost of the ever increasing landfill tax.

"With Christmas just around the corner, I would like to remind residents that most of their extra waste – cards, plastic packaging, wrapping paper and cardboard – can be recycled."
