Work on creating a community orchard in Wilmslow will start next week.

Transition Wilmslow are working with Cheshire East Council to plant an orchard in Gravel Lane Park which will initially contain nine apple trees donated by Cheshire Orchard Trust and a cherry tree from Newgate Allotments.

The planting will take place at 9.30am on Tuesday, 13th December, and be attended by children from Ashdene Primary, local council officials and Incredible Edible Volunteers. Anyone who would like to take part is also welcome to attend.

Rachel Corrigan, member of Transition Wilmslow, commented "This is our first orchard plot within Wilmslow and we're really keen to get local residents involved in the project in whatever way they want: whether helping us plant the trees on the day, or just to come and support us.

"It's just one small step to making Wilmslow that little bit more sustainable foodwise but more importantly it's a special place for the community to come and enjoy."

The intention is to plant more trees next year and develop the park as a treasured community garden for everyone enjoy.

Transition Wilmslow is a local community group focusing upon local resilience and sustainability and preparing Wilmslow for the challenges of peak oil and climate change. The group has three key steering groups; food, transport, and energy; all of which are active within the community.

I just hope that it will not be immediately vandalised.

I used to live at 28 Burford Crescent but I cannot remember where Gravel Lane is now.

Much success!

That's an amazing idea and I wish I could be there for the planting! Just recently started working in Wilmslow and think it's a beautiful place.
Who knows maybe I could donate a tree for future plantings!?
Looking forward to visiting your little orchard in the future :-)

I hope that they will all be traditional English apple trees.
