Incredible sculptures planned for Wilmslow

Incredible Edible are hoping to have a collection of wooden fruit and vegetable sculptures installed around the town centre.

Helen Yates, who launched Incredible Edible Wilmslow in November 2010, told me "The idea of the sculptures is to give Wilmslow a new identity around food.

"We have such wonderful farmshops, bars, cafes and restaurants around town and with the arrival of the Artisan Market and Incredible Edible plots, we are already making a tourist pull around great food.

"The sculptures will be an extension of that, to help to increase footfall into the town for all businesses to benefit from.

"Our town is in need of a little more love and there are some brilliant initiatives that are happening throughout local business and community groups to improve our identity. We are gradually pulling together as a united community to make this happen and make Wilmslow a place to visit and be even more proud of."

Wilmslow Town Council agreed at their recent meeting, on Monday 17th October, to support Incredible Edible by sponsoring one of the sculptures.

Cllr Ellie Brooks, who proposed the motion, said "I think they're doing a wonderful job and I would like us to sponsor one of their sculptures. I think it would be a nice gesture on behalf of the Town Council. It is a nice communal thing for a small amount of money."

The sculpture should last about 20 years, will cost between £500 and £700 and feature a Town Council plaque.

The first Incredible Edible sculpture, which will probably be of an apple located at Wilmslow Station, will be sponsored by Network Rail, and Wilmslow Town Council voted to sponsor the second one, which will be created from a felled tree by Frankland Tree Services Ltd.

Helen said "They are a local company from Ashley with a strong environmental policy, so all the wood will be locally felled and instead of wasted, used to enhance the environment of our town."

The site being looked at for the second sculpture is near the Romany Caravan and it will be a piece of fruit or a vegetable. The sculptor will decide what to create once a tree has been found to see what is suitable.

Cllr Paul Barton said "I've had quite a lot of involvement with Incredible Edible and the volunteers put an incredible amount of work in which adds character to the town. They have made things which looked mediocre look fantastic, personally I think it is a very worthwhile thing to give our support to."

Helen added "Things are simply at the planning stage, so it's some way off yet but we're hoping to have as many as possible around town, to really go for this and produce a map around town showing where the community plots and sculptures are.

"If any companies would like to get involved and sponsor a fruit or veg sculpture, we would love to hear from them, please email helena@[email protected]
