The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge is under way and Cheshire East Council is urging people to get voting.

The aim of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge, which is part of commemorations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year, is to protect local green spaces for future generations.

The sites, which will not be renamed, will benefit from additional protection and may also have access to additional funding, via the scheme, in the future.

More than 2,000 sites will be commemorated across the UK but they must be nominated by local residents.

Lacey Green playing fields, in Wilmslow, is amongst the four sites put forward by Cheshire East Council. The others are Sandbach Community Football Centre; McLaren Street playing fields in Crewe and Back Lane playing fields in Congleton.

Voting starts today, Wednesday October 18th, and votes can be cast on the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge website for the next four weeks.

Cheshire East Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "All Cheshire East's green spaces and playing fields are important and we want to make sure they are protected for many years to come.

"I would urge people across Cheshire East to get voting and make sure one or more of Cheshire East's playing fields are given a royal seal of approval."
