Wilmslow Town Council are looking ahead to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee which will be celebrated during a special 4-day weekend at the beginning of June 2012.

They would like to mark this significant achievement of Her Majesty with both a permanent memorial and a celebratory weekend in Wilmslow.

Wilmslow Town Council wish to engage as many local people as possible and are inviting residents, schools and community groups to contribute ideas to the ways in which this anniversary could be acknowledged.

The Town Council invites individuals or groups of residents to submit proposals to provide a permanent or semi-permanent memorial to mark the Jubilee next year.

Proposals should be supported by a plan or drawing, together with an estimate of building or other costs and any subsequent maintenance. Ideally, the memorial should be located close to the town centre or in a visible part of the catchment area.

An independent panel will judge entries based upon their appropriateness, attractiveness, sustainability, location and cost. However, the Council will not be committed to selecting a scheme submitted only by the entrants.

The weekend of 2nd to 5th June 2012 will be the focus of nationwide celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty the Queen. The Palace has already suggested that a chain of beacons should be lit during that weekend but, as Wilmslow is low-lying, it is felt that the effect of a beacon would not be appreciated.

The Town Council invites suggestions for an alternative but appropriate celebration with the potential to entertain and involve participants of all ages. The Council is proposing that a 'fun fair' of rides and entertainments is sited near to the town centre and that this could be a back drop for additional, memorable activities during a hectic weekend.

Entries for the memorial, for which terms and conditions will apply, should be submitted to the Town Clerk by 30th November 2011. The winning entry will be announced by the year end.

Entries for the celebrations, for which terms and conditions will apply, should be submitted to the Town Clerk by 31st December 2011. The winning entry will be announced after the Council meeting in January 2012.

Terms and conditions for entry will be available from the Town Clerk.

The new Town Clerk will take up the role from next week so we will update this article with their contact details once confirmed.
