Artisan Market set to return bigger and better

Wilmslow's Artisan Market returns on Saturday and promises to be an even bigger and better family event.

Organisers Denise Valente and Vicky Jackson came up with the idea of putting on the market in Wilmslow to increase the number of people choosing to come into the town, rather than visiting out-of–town shopping malls.

Speaking with retailers after last month's event they certainly achieved their aim with some retail businesses recording increased takings of over 25% on market day.

Denise explained "By providing a regular monthly event where people can browse and buy artisan produce and soak up the market atmosphere, within the confines of the retail layout, we are hoping to put the vibrant heart back into Wilmslow and make the town a regular bustling shopping destination once again."

Feedback from both the shoppers and retailers after the first market day in July was overwhelmingly positive.

Comments from local residents included; "It's put the soul back into the town", "just what Wilmslow has needed", "the best thing to have happened in town for a long, long time", "its brought Wilmslow to life again" and "the busiest I have seen Grove Street in over 20 years".

Following the event Denise and Vicky canvassed Wilmslow retailers to obtain information about how the market had affected their sales, suggestions for improvements and ideas of how retailers could become more involved.

They spoke to over 50 retail premises, nearly 80% of which indicated they had witnessed an increase in footfall, many by as much as 15%, and over 60% of businesses experienced an increase in takings compared to the same time last year - some businesses saw takings increase by over 15%.

The majority of businesses requested that the market should run for longer and be held more frequently.

The second Artisan Market will take place on Saturday, 20th August, and will be even bigger than the first with over 80 specialist traders set up along Grove Street and Bank Square bringing new and varied produce.

Denise and Vicky are also planning to incorporate as many of the recommendations received from retailers, traders and shoppers as possible.

This weekend the market will also host a number of workshops run by Incredible Edible who will be sharing their aspirations on making Wilmslow a place where we can celebrate and learn about growing food locally.

Every half an hour throughout the day there will be guest speakers covering a range of topics from growing your own chickens, the basics about fruit trees and making your own compost.

There will also be activities for the children and live music again from local singer Dan Williams.

The market will be open from 10am until 4pm and dates for future markets can be found in our events calendar.

Another great event - sun shining again which definately helps bring people out and it is great to see the town centre so vibrant. There were lots more stalls, and a lot more stalls had produce into the afternoon - such a shame that a lot of the local wasps came out to plague the fresh fish stall [well done fish stall for keeping the rest of the market relatively wasp free, ha ha]and unfortunately I spent too much money! Feedback I'd have for the stall owners/sellers is to better promote where their produce can be bought if its good - lots of stalls didn't put a label on their produce to say where it was from so i got back home with some wonderful pies and bread etc, I'd no idea where it was from as had forgotten/seen so many stalls! Some stalls had leaflets but most seemed not too.
Also, there's suggestion in the article that the market's held more frequently.. imho less is more. It could turn out to be less of an 'event' if it was too frequent.
But, keep it up and with any luck it always brings the fair weather!

I went to the market on the 20th Aug for the first time.....(had heard about it so wanted to check it out). I thought it was great! Just what Wilmslow needed!
I have lived here for 6 years and thought the town centre lacked character compared to places like Knutsford, but having this one a month would be perfect! Something special with local products, and very vibrant...agree with Alison about it not being done too frequently....

Hazel, the Paella stall is Las Paelleras, run by Lee and Steph tel:447717848649, and they do cater for weddings.

Yes I agree with you Alison and Shanila, the Artisan Market will only run once a month, that way hopefully it will remain a busy community event for Wilmslow, and thank you for your lovely comments.

Denise and I are delighted with how it's going, and we are really looking forward to the September 17th market where we will be working with Transition Wilmslow, who will be running a number of bike related workshops and have organised a family friendly bike ride from the market.

Also Alison I will pass on your comments to the stall holders regarding labels, and leaflets and I am currently working on a website which will contain stallholders details. Thank you again for all your support.

I would like to congratulate Victoria and Denise for their foresight, hard work and great achievment in bringing such a vibrant market to Wilmslow.
I love these type of markets and have attended many, including a fantastic one in New Zealand last year. The Wilmslow Artisan market is definitely up there with the best. A great achievment in only 2 months of being open!
With new businesses opening, the new monthly market, the Scarecrow Festival and Incredible Edibles, Wilmslow is becoming a vibrant and characterful town centre.
A big well done to all concerned!!

Hi Victoria,
The markets were excellent, thoroughly enjoyed it. How do the stall holders get a pitch?
Thanks
