Wilmslow man pleads guilty to making explosives

A Wilmslow man who has been charged with making explosives for an unlawful purpose appeared at Chester Crown Court again on Tuesday, July 5th.

Andrew James Speakman, 44, who was left blinded in one eye by the explosion, pleaded guilty to making unlawful explosives.

Police were called to Mr Speakman's house on Beech Lane at 9.31pm on Thursday, 9th March, after local residents reported hearing a loud explosion.

As a precautionary measure 30 occupants of neighbouring properties were evacuated to Wilmslow Leisure Centre while a search of the premises was carried out.

A number of chemicals wee found stored in the house including hydrogen peroxide, hydrochloric acid and plant food.

The explosion blew a hole in the garden fence but did not cause any significant damage to the property, or to any of the adjoining premises.

Mr Speakman has been remanded in custody for sentencing which will take place next month.
