The Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival is back and once again the wonderful straw creations have taken over the streets bringing colour and fun to the town centre.
There are over 100 scarecrows in total - those hanging out on the pavements are difficult to miss, whilst others aren't so obvious so do take a stroll around town looking in shop windows, doorways and even up high on the rooftops. There really is a surprise around every corner and, new for this year, eight local schools and one Brownie group are taking part in the competition with their entries displayed in the Hooper's shop window on Alderley Road.
Entry forms for the scarecrow competition can be collected from Hoopers, Ned Yates, Mailboxes, Multiyork, Sainsbury's, Shentons Farm, Simon Dunn and Vision Express. This year it is a 'find them by the picture' competition where each of the clues is a photo taken from a section of one of the scarecrows - with prizes available for both adults and children.
The scarecrows will remain on display until Saturday, 9th July, when a special scarecrow parade will take place to celebrate the 100th Wilmslow Show. The first parade will start at around 11.30am from Sainsburys and travel down Alderley Street and Grove Street, then at 2.30pm it will depart from the Fire Station and travel down Water Lane and Grove Street - providing an opportunity to dance with the very loud and visual Batala Samba Band and Rotary Robin and Rosie, two 12ft Scarecrows.
Celebrations will continue into the evening with another new family event. A Charity Hoedown and Hog Roast will be held in a beer tent at the Wilmslow Show ground where guests can sing and dance to the Bandwagon Hoedown Band.
Tickets are £12.50 each and included in the price is a hog roast bap. Drinks, served by wenches, will be available from a licensed bar and there will be a special raffle with some great prizes which have generously been donated by local businesses. Tickets are available from Sainsburys Wilmslow and The Horse and Jockey Pub on Gravel Lane.
The Grand Scarecrow Finale will take place at the Wilmslow Show on Sunday 10th July, with the winner of the best scarecrow being announced in the marquee of the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean.
All profits from the Scarecrow Festival and Charity Hoedown will be given by the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean to the Alzheimer Society, a sensory room for autistic children in a local school and the Children's Adventure Trust Farm.
