Electrical fault causes Wilmslow Garden Centre fire

The huge fire which destroyed Wilmslow Garden Centre on Wednesday, 29th June, is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. However, the exact location of the fault is still being identified.

The fire, which has devastated the Centre, is now completely out and all emergency services have left the scene, which is now sealed off.

Fire crews were called to the Garden Centre on Manchester Road shortly after 5.30am yesterday where they discovered a well developed fire involving greenhouses. As a result of the fire four large greenhouses have been completely burnt out and at the height of the incident 70 firefighters tackled the blaze which 15 fire engines attended.

Area Manager Phil Hales who was at the scene said, "From the initial call out, firefighters were aware of the scale of the fire and called upon resources to fight the fire and contain it. Due to their quick actions they were able to stop the fire spreading to adjacent premises."

Unfortunately, it was later confirmed that a number of small animals and fish which were in a pet centre within the premises had died. Some tropical fish and Koi Carp did survive and have been transferred to another location.

The Garden Centre will be open tomorrow - Saturday 02/07/2011 for the sale of plants and trees which were well away from the fire and not damaged. The Hot Tubs and Pools will be open for business as usual, however our customers will have to be escorted to our shop and office. The phone and internet are restored so you can phone and e mail your orders as usual.

Thank you very much for all the kind concern shown from our customers and friends.
