Spend a woody weekend at Styal Mill

Come along to a woody weekend at Styal Wood Fair! c National Trust

Quarry Bank Mill is hosting the first Styal Wood Fair later this month when around eight craftsmen and women will be demonstrating the art of working in wood.

The fair will be held on the Mill Meadow during Father's Day weekend on June 18th and 19th.

Simon Hiley, Quarry Bank's Estate Manager who's organised the Wood Fair said: "Here at Styal we're surrounded by wood – so we thought it would be a great idea to have an event focussed around working with wood to show just how versatile it is. We're delighted with the response we've had from individual craftspeople and organisations who wanted to be a part of the event."

Cheshire Guild of Wood Turners will be demonstrating wood working with power-driven lathes and visitors will be able to have a go at some simple wood turning.

Robin Storey from the Worshipful Company of Turners, who specialises in using English burr wood and making large bowls, will be here. Trug maker and coppice craftsman Bill Sanders will be giving people the opportunity to see how he works and there will be demonstrations of chainsaw carving and charcoal making.

Birdnet Optics will also be offering advice on 'digiscoping' – taking photographs of trees, birds and anything else through a telescope using a digital camera.

Simon said "You can get some fantastic photos – so make sure you stop by their stall, and if you're looking for rare or more specialist wood working tools, head for The Old Tool Store, where Ray Iles will be please to help.

"Don't forget you can also enjoy some great woodland walks around Styal and the River Bollin."

Styal Wood Fair will take place from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June. Normal admission rates apply and National Trust members are free.

Just been down to this event and had a great time. There's not a massive amount there, but the woodturning was fascinating, and my lad was able to have a go and made himself a spinning top. Worth a look if you are after something to do this weekend, coupled with a wander round the mill and garden.
