Records set at Wilmslow Triathlon

Winners Wilmslow Tri 2011

With 550 entries, a record number of people took part in the 2011 Wilmslow Triathlon held on Sunday, May 8th.

In the 'Elite Wave' of the event there was also a record number of eight GB athletes, including Georgia Taylor Brown who is one of Manchester's 2012 Olympic hopefuls in triathlon.

The race included a new course for the run, which meant that winners Roger Witz of Manchester Triathlon Club, and Jacqui Slack, of Royles Tri Team, set inaugural course records.

Roger Witz won in a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes and 30 seconds. He had a good race, from being second quickest in the 400m swim he pushed hard on the 24.2km bike stage but was overtaken by GB triathlete, Martin Cain of Oldham. However, Witz fought back on the 5.6km run to overtake Cain and take first place.

Jacqui Slack had a phenomenal win beating rival Dominique Searle, who was fresh back from having a baby, by over 4 minutes, in a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes and 57 seconds. She had a particularly strong cycle stage, and her eventual finish time beat most of the male field too, coming ninth overall.

The race was completed by 189 novices and to encourage their participation there was a novice prize category, the winners of which were Tim Davies who completed the race in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 55 seconds and Sue Brown who finished in a time of 1 hour, 18 minutes and 59 seconds.

The event started from the Wilmslow Leisure Centre, where the swim was held in its indoor pool. The cycle route then took competitors around local villages and the run was mainly on paths around residential areas of Wilmslow.

The Wilmslow Triathlon was organised by Xtra Mile Events and the competitors were cheered around the course by the very supportive marshals which included volunteers from the Handforth Girl Guides and 6th Wilmslow Scouts.
