Work is well underway at South Oak play area

Work has begun to improve 12 children's play areas across Cheshire East including the South Oak play area in Wilmslow.

The first stage of the project started on Monday, February 28th, and was finished that week. This work included installing a basket swing, climbing net, a supernova, a springy and a spinner at a cost £23,000.

The second stage of the project starts in April or May and will include adding climbing blocks, a multi-unit for toddlers and a balance trail. This second part is being funded by WREN to the tune of £15,000.

This project, along with the other 11 across Cheshire East, are all part of the second phase of the Playbuilder programme - a national scheme which grants local authorities money to turn areas into innovative and adventurous play spaces.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, said: "It is fantastic news that we are now in a position to begin work on these projects, especially after the initial Playbuilder funding was cut by central government.

"It was later reinstated, although not ring-fenced to Playbuilder. Despite this, Cheshire East has honoured its obligation to ensure the money would be spent on improving these play areas.

"I would like to thank all the town and parish councils, community groups and ward councillors for all of their help and support in securing the funding for these projects."

The £550,000 project was made possible by a Department for Education grant of £333,000 and additional Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) funds totalling £209,000.

Peter Cox, managing director of WREN, said: "WREN is committed to funding projects that make a real difference to local communities, children and families.

"The refurbishments across Cheshire East will provide fantastic spaces for local people to get outdoors and have some fun. We're delighted to support Cheshire East Council to make this happen and look forward to the completion of the projects."

What a super scheme! This is a testiment to community involvement in improving local facilities. The new equipment will provide enhanced provision in the local area and is a significant improvement over what was there before.
From driving past this site over the last few weeks, the usage of this site has increased massively and it would appear that most of the local children now use the site.
The equipment that has been installed compliments the existing equipment and now provides a wide range of activities for 2-17 year olds.

I would expect that when the WREN equipment is installed, this site will be a paragon of play in the local area and will mean that local families no longer have to trek to The Carrs to access a good quality play area.
Hopefully when Wilmslow Parish Council is formed, they will continue to support and improve this site and the other nearby underused site just along Gravel Lane.
