Brothers win North West cyclo-cross championships

The Braybrooke brothers from Wilmslow were both winners this weekend in the North West cyclo-cross championships.

Alex, 13, and Christian, 14, both attend Wilmslow High School and rode a great series having secured 1st place in the U14 and U16 categories respectively, before the final event.

The North West cyclo cross league takes place from September to January over a series of 14 races throughout the North West. The youth races, which take place in age categories: under 16, under 14 and under 12, involve half an hour racing over 'park' type terrain. Recent events included the 'Macclesfield Super Cross' in South Park, Macclesfield.

Cyclo cross is a mix between mountain bike and road racing. It's pretty tough and requires high levels of stamina, fitness and skill to control a bike with thin tyres which is travelling at speed and often in muddy conditions. Part of the course will involve dismounting from the bike over hurdles or running whilst carrying the bike where the course is unrideable.

Phil Braybooke, father of Alex and Christian, said "The weather can play a big part in the race, this year's league has included racing in the snow as a cycle cross race never gets cancelled because of the weather. There is a high level of competition with 30 or so riders competing in each race."

Christian and Alex also compete at national level with Alex having just finished 6th nationally over a 5 race series and Christian has won the North West league in his first year as an U16.

Phil added "The whole the team is thrilled with this first win for Velocity 3in1 CNP and we are looking forward to a great season on the track and the road when we hope to see many more of the team excel."

Velocity 3in1 is a brand new racing team, based in Wilmslow, which has been set up to replicate the trade team structure that operates at the junior and senior levels and will comprise of seven of the country's top young cyclists.
