Friends campaign for additional rail services

Friends of Styal Station are urging local residents to support their campaign for addition rail services for Styal.

Styal railway station serves not only the local population but also visitors to the National Trust Quarry Bank Mill property and HMP Styal and there is now a brief window of opportunity to lobby for improvements in the timetable that takes effect in December 2011. After that there will be no changes for at least another 12 months.

Rob Sawyer, from Friends of Styal Station, said "The railway station has a major tourist attraction, Styal Country Park/Quarry Bank Mill, on its doorstep plus one of the UK's largest female prisons.

"We have successfuly campaigned to get 3 trains per day Monday to Saturday as of December 2008 and Sunday services from 17th May 2009, however your voice will help to see services develop further - especially on Saturdays."

Friends of Styal Station are lobbying Northern Rail because, whilst they are grateful for limited weekday service improvements and the re-introduction of Sunday services, they would like increased service frequency on Saturdays to meet the needs of people visiting HMP Styal and National Trust Styal as well as increased service frequency on weekdays to meet the needs of local residents as well as visitors to Styal.

If you wish to pledge your support for additional rail services for Styal email [email protected] and copy in [email protected]. Alternatively you can register your support via 07779 483713. Any requests for additional services at Styal need to be in by the end of January.

Friends of Styal Station are a group of people living in the vicinity of Styal with a desire to see a viable future for Styal railway station. In addition to campaigning for a development of rail services for the local community and visitors to Styal they help to promote these services and work to enhance the appearance of the station. See their website for more details.
