Scamps present West Side Story

Tony & Maria - Joel Harper & Jenny Kent

The talented youngsters that make up the energetic youth theatre group, Scamps, are eagerly rehearsing every week for their upcoming musical production of West Side Story in early March.

As relevant today as it was in the 1950s when written, this classic tale of gang rivalry, fated lovers, heartache and disaster is a modern take on Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”.  And of course, it contains the much-loved musical numbers, “Maria”, I Feel Pretty”, “One Hand One Heart” and “Tonight” to mention just four from many favourites in this fully orchestrated production.

West Side Story tells the tale of Maria (Jenny Kent) and Tony (Joel Harper) who fall in love. But their romance is doomed. Tony is one of the founding members of “The Jets”, a teenage street gang made up of working class kids that battle constantly for neighbourhood control with a local rival gang, “The Sharks”.

The Sharks come from a Hispanic background and are lead by Bernardo (Bryan Mottram). Unfortunately, Maria is Bernardo’s sister.  So the feelings that Tony and Maria share for each other can only cause explosive reactions from the opposing gangs towards each other. Inevitably, this scenario leads to tragedy.

Playing at the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow from March 8th to 12th, tickets are on sale now and range in price from £7 to £12. These are available via the ticket booking line 07969 176148 or online at www.scampstheatre.co.uk.  There is also a Saturday matinée performance. Don’t miss out, book now as Scamps shows fill quickly and are always a big hit!
