Recycle household cooking oil

Cheshire East Council may have found the answer to disposing of used cooking oil. The Authority has made a new addition to their Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) in the form of cooking oil containers where local residents can now take their used cooking oil and dispose of it properly. The oil will then be recycled into Bio-Fuel. This can then be used as transport fuel and in heat and power systems.

Each container has a 150-litre capacity and is fitted with a special gauge to inform staff when they are full and in the first few weeks of introducing the containers, staff from HW Martin Waste Ltd, who run Cheshire East's HWRCs, will be on hand to advise local residents.

The company in charge of processing the cooking oil and turning it into Bio-Fuel is Convert2Green Ltd, based in Middlewich. If the scheme is successful, larger containers will be increased and additional containers placed in HWRCs across Cheshire East.

Cheshire East Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said "This is a very interesting project with lots of potential. Disposing of used cooking oils can damage drainage systems if poured down the sink or create a lot of mess in bins. This alternative choice for disposal is both convenient and environmentally friendly.

"We all know the importance of finding new ways to generate energy and bio-fuels are one way this can be achieved. The fact that this is being done by a Cheshire East company puts this area at the forefront of ideas and innovation in recycling."

Frank Harrington from Convert2Green, said: "We are very excited to be working with Cheshire East Council and HW Martin on this groundbreaking waste-to-energy initiative. The bio-fuel we make from used cooking oil will create heat and power for public buildings, such as hospitals.

"This demonstrates that local residents can not only help our public services, but they can make a real contribution to the recycling of waste and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions."

Our nearest Cheshire East's Household Waste Recycling Centres can be found at Mobberley Road in Knutsford and off the A536 Macclesfield to Congleton Road at Gawsworth.

A sensible and welcome new initiative, but how many people are going to drive (greenhouse gases and all that) all the way from Wilmslow to Knutsford to empty a bottle of used cooking oil?
Couldn't we have a facility at the Sainsbury car park?

Hi Ronald

I have raised your question with Cheshire East Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, today.

Councillor Menlove confirmed "The initial trial of the cooking oil recycling container is at the Middlewich HWRC (household waste recycling centre). Depending on the results we will extend the service to the other 8 sites in Cheshire East and the nearest sites to Wilmslow are Knutsford and Poynton."

"Any further consideration of extension of the service would follow after evaluation of the performance at the HWRCs.

"The view of the container supplier is that this service is suitable for a manned site thus excluding our unmanned bring sites (such as Broadway Meadow)."

He added "I haven't talked to Sainsbury so do not know their view on making such a facility available in-store."
