Wilmslow prepares to party in the streets

For the 8th consecutive year the Wilmslow Street Party will bring the community together on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30th - providing an opportunity for children, parents, grandparents, friends and relatives to come and enjoy a good old fashioned day out whilst supporting various local charities.

To keep the crowds entertained throughout the Bank Holiday a whole programme of street entertainment has been lined up from 11am until 4pm. Regulars the Dixieland Hot Shots, who have been coming to the street party since it started in 2002, will be joined by Michelle from Dance Fever and Monica Ballani who will perform 2 Indian dances. Imagine FM will be broadcasting live from Grove Street throughout the afternoon.

Over 25 charities will be participating, including a few new ones - all of whom come free of charge and keep all their proceeds.

Organiser Khumi Burton said "This non profit making event is for the community, not only for Wilmslow but the surrounding areas so this year we have changed the name to Wilmslow Community Street Party.

"It is good to see that Grove Street becomes alive with activities and enjoyment and the day brings a very friendly, family orientated atmosphere. The street party is going from strength to strength, we have a lot of visitors and the charities do well for themselves on the day."

In previous years 2000-3000 people have come together on Grove Street and this year Khumi Burton is hoping for another strong turnout so let's hope the sun is shining for this fantastic family day out.

Talking about the history of the street party, Khumi Barton, who has lived in Wilmslow for 33 years and is a member of Wilmslow Forum, said "It all started when the country was celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002. Nothing was happening in Wilmslow so I initiated this community event which has gone from strength to strength and is now in its 8th year."
