Church transformed by floral extravaganza

The Friends of the Parish of Wilmslow presented A Midsummer Extravaganza this weekend with flowers and music, which provided a unique opportunity to see St Bart's Church decorated by a masterclass of florists with thousands of pounds worth of beautiful flowers.

Students from the UK School of Floristry, at The Flower Shop on Water Lane, were taking the diploma course with world famous florist Wally Klett from Stuttgart and having been taught Wally's techniques in decorative wedding work the students then had to recreate her famous style of wedding floristry for the examination, which was judged by Wally Klett & Ian Lloyd.

The creations, which were then taken to St Bart's Church for the midsummer celebration and during the evening members of Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra provided entertainment whilst guests appreciated the flowers.

The music was skilfully chosen to compliment the white and gold bridal theme and provided "A good selection for a warm summer evening" said leader of the string octet Adrienne Spilsbury. Highlights of the program included Shostakovich - 'Gadfly' and Piazzolla's superbly evocative Libertango arranged by Adrienne Spilsbury, and the quintessential Three Shanties by renowned British composer Sir Malcolm Arnold.

The event, which was well supported, was presented by The Friends of the Parish of Wilmslow that was formed in 1990 to bring together all those who care for St Bart's and St Anne's and to raise funds to help maintain and restore the fabric of the two buildings.

The orchestra holds concerts five times a year in the Evans Theatre, Wilmslow Leisure Centre and perform an ambitious range of music. The ensemble has a reputation for its imaginative programmes that are designed to appeal to both audiences and players alike. The next concert is on October 16th 2010 and features music from Weber, Dvorac & Bruch, with acclaimed Canadian violinist Sadie Fields.
