The fourth Wilmslow Triathlon attracted a capacity field of 500 triathletes made up of experienced, talented athletes and complete novices who have now attained the revered status of 'triathlete'. Contrary to Met Office reports the sun shone throughout the race keeping up the 100% weather record that we are building at this event.
The triathlon starts with a 400m swim in the Wilmslow Leisure Centre pool followed by a 23km cycle route around the country lanes through Ashley and Mobberley, returning to the Leisure Centre before the competitors finish with a 6km run around the leafy Wilmslow streets.
The men's race was won by Roger Witz Barnes of Manchester Tri Club in a time of 1hr 6mins and 41secs and the women's race was won by Eleanor Haresign of Glasgow Tri Club in a course record of 1hr 16mins.
Witz Barnes led from the start, posting the fastest swim time of 4mins 43secs for the 400m, he extended this with the fastest bike time taking him into the run 2 minutes ahead of second place Paul Skipper. In spite of a valiant run by Skipper, Witz Barnes' lead was too much and he held on to win by 1m 38secs.
The women's race was a similar story with Haresign posting the fastest swim and bike giving her an unassailable lead in spite of Amy Hibbert's faster run. Haresign took the course record off Jacqui Slack who turned professional this year - let's see how Eleanor gets on in years to come!
