Reader's Letter: Unacceptable 22 week road closure in Handforth

IMG_0950[2305843009213773355]

There has been significant negative comment on Cheshire East and Stockport's 22 week closure of the through route between Handforth and the car wash opposite Handforth Mosque.

The council is claiming this is all good news and part of government plans to build more cycle routes. But there is no information or explanation as to why this closure is taking so long?

Why can't such a major closure be completed in a much shorter time?

It is causing major access problems for residents and through traffic which has to divert to the A34 bypass. We can't access the Lakeland kitchenware shop or the dual carriageway to the airport or east to Poynton and Bramhall except by smaller roads.

There is no residential properties close to the roadworks, so why can't the roadworks be continuous 24 hours a day

Laughable if it wasn't so serious. A total waste of time and money. Have a look at the cycle lane on Manchester Rd South between the Premier Inn and the Wilmslow Garden Centre - totally blocked 5 days per week - but who cares anymore?

If you live in Handforth why are you driving to Lakeland? If driving to Bramhall the diversion would add less than 10 minutes

Road closure notices cover a far longer period than the anticipated works. This allows for any delays in construction without it timing out, which would mean redoing the legal paperwork.

The CEC web site states it’s a 7 week closure for the work though, that will happen during the 22 week road closure window.

Not sure why anyone says there is no information on this, as I found the CEC web page in moments thanks to Google and it was updated in November 2023.

Several people here seem to take a very indifferent stance to this major disruption of traffic. Andrew Taylor thinks all day and night repairs even though houses are close by would not be an issue for residents.

John Smith thinks walking from Handforth to the Lakeland shop is the answer, but forgets that many local people live further away than Handforth. And it would only take as little as 10 mins if going to Bramhall. The closure is causing major delays and traffic jams on the A34 bypass.

Mark Goldsmith argues unconvincingly that it could just be a 7 week closure for the work, but the delays have already taken longer than 7 weeks with no sign of work ending. Cheshire East as usual is failing to keep residents and people transiting the area informed or clearly explaining the 'benefits' except as a government national agenda, that many would challenge.

“Are” Andy!
All part of the plan to ensure motorists are inconvenienced as much as possible just like the pot hole and drain clearing incompetence.
Time for a clear out starting at no 10 and working down.
OT. Any news of our resident (and expensive) medical expert “Dr.” Matt??

The work has now finnished, and the roadway is ready for traffic.

The team have done a lot of work, including improving the drainage and resurfacing the road surface. This should improve the road for drivers, and would have required another expensive and time wasting road closure if it was completed at another time. This was completed in far less than the 22 weeks timespan that was causing concern.
