Service commemorates 75th anniversary of World War II battles

A special service was held in Wilmslow on October 12th to commemorate the 75th anniversary of two battles described as the turning point of one of the most gruelling campaigns of World War II.

Wilmslow resident Khumi Burton, who comes from Imphal, organised the service at St Bartholomew's Church to remember those who fought and those who died in the Battles of Imphal and Kohima in the North East of India fought between March 8th and June 18th 1944.

There was a duet by Anna and Katy, readings by John Dwyer whose father was in the 12th Army and Alan Cooper read in memory of Norman Burgess age 22 from Wilmslow who died in Kohima.

The service was conducted by Rev. Kirsty Allan and attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire and his wife, MP Esther McVey, the Mayor and Mayoress of Cheshire East Council, Marin Watkins Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council and councillors from Wilmslow and Stockport.

Guests included a Burma Star veteran John Hullaha, who attended along with Des Heath who was in the Intelligence Corp in Burma, and some local families from Manipur.

Khumi said "I am very glad we are able to honour the soldiers from UK and India who fought together in the Far East for our freedom today."
