Firefighters were called to a fire in the garden of a residential property on Spath Lane in Handforth in the early hours of Monday, 2nd July.

Three fire appliances attended the scene at 2.22am where they discovered a pigeon loft was well alight.

Wearing a breathing apparatus, the crew used two hose reel jets and one 45 millimetre jet to help put out the blaze.

A thermal imaging camera was used to look at the impact the fire had caused to neighbouring properties after windows cracked and a shed had also caught fire.

A number of pigeons unfortunately died in the fire.

Police Sergeant John O'Driscoll said "No cause of fire has been identified at this time. It was a standalone structure so presumption is possible arson."

He added "There is nothing to link this to recent fires which were started by youths in open spaces."

PCSO Harding has been on Spath Lane this morning doing reassurance and welfare checks.

Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 110655.
