Youngsters recognised for contribution to Poppy Appeal

Nearly 300 people gathered at Wilmslow High School last month for the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire Young People's Award.

Army, air, fire and sea cadets along with scouts, guides and students were joined by their parents and grandparents for the special presentation to acknowledge the important role young people play in the annual Royal British Poppy Appeal.

The Mayor & Mayoress of Cheshire East, Lord Grey President of British Legion Cheshire County, Vice President Susan Sellars, County Chairman Chris King and sponsors attended the event along with David Briggs, Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, who handed out the certificates and trophies.

Khumi Burton, County Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator for Cheshire East, along with a small team of volunteers, has been organising this event for the past three years but feels that their time has come to an end.

She said "Unfortunately and also very sadly this will be the last event for the Young People of Cheshire. I have headed this with the help of Margaret, Joy, Iwonna, Ken in 2015, 2016 and 2018."

Khumi, who was once a young cadet in India. added "Cheshire is the only county in the country who held this event for some of the Young people of Cheshire who helped with the Poppy Appeal."

The Wilmslow Poppy Appeal raised £31,427.39 last year, despite not covering as many businesses and shops as they have in previous years, and the total for Cheshire was £1,163,607.00 - which is still rising daily because of donations.
