Wilmslow schools shut again Wednesday

Due to adverse weather conditions hundreds of local children will enjoy another day off as Wilmslow schools will remain shut tomorrow.

Ashdene, Gorsey Bank, Lacey Green, St Anne's Fulshaw and Lindow Primary schools have all confirmed they will remain closed on Wednesday along with Wilmslow Preparatory and Wilmslow High schools. Pownall Hall is not due to open until Thursday anyway.

With the worst weather conditions experienced in the North West for 30 years closures also affected Wilmslow Leisure Centre which was shut all day, Manchester Airport did not open until 1pm and Tatton Park was only open to pedestrians.

The M60 was also closed this afternoon at junction 25 because of a fatal crash involving two lorries and the North West Ambulance Service, Deputy Chief Executive Bob Williams commented;

“Due to the severe weather conditions currently being experienced across the region, the North West Ambulance Service has declared a major incident. This is due to the fact, particularly in Greater Manchester, we are unlikely to be able to reach patients with minor injuries or symptoms. We are having to stringently prioritise all of our 999 calls and despatch our resources to life-threatening cases only. We would like to stress the urgency for people to stay indoors unless it is absolutely necessary."

All available gritting vehicles, equipped with snow ploughs to deals with heavy snow, salted priority routes three times today and several teams were out this evening salting footpaths by hand. However vehicles which have been abandoned in the snow are causing problems for gritting lorries and making some areas very difficult to treat.

A spokesman from Cheshire East Council said "Again, we would urge anyone who intends to make a journey by foot or car to do so only if absolutely necessary."

The latest news regarding the winter weather is that all available gritting vehicles have treated all priority routes across Cheshire East overnight and this morning.

Crews were sent out in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 6th) and will return to the roads this afternoon and again this evening - all gritting vehicles are currently being re-loaded at Winsford salt mine.

Crews will aim to treat some secondary routes or ‘B’ roads throughout today and they will also be salting footways across the region this afternoon.

Due to drifting snow, which is currently being ploughed, the A537 "Cat and Fiddle" and A54 remain closed.

A spokesperson from Cheshire East said "We would urge all local residents to make a journey by car or foot only if necessary and to check traffic reports before travelling."

Wilmslow High School will remain closed tomorrow as well, possibly opening on Friday. The carparks and paths are dangerous.
